A revamped 14th Street. But it's only temporary.

Hi,

Welcome back to This Week In Lincoln. This is my regular Thursday round-up of local events. You can find the event calendar below.

Given the ongoing construction on and around O Street, I was a bit worried about the status of Zoo Fest. (It starts tomorrow!) But as you can see in the photo above, which I took yesterday, construction crews have paved 14th Street. According to reporting from the Journal Star, this isn't the final form; it's a temporary layer of concrete that was installed, apparently, so the show could go on. Per the Journal Star:

Zoo Bar owner Pete Watters said ZooFest, the annual outdoor music festival, will continue as normal at North 14th and P streets on Friday and Saturday despite Project O Street shutting down the surrounding area.

While early ticket sales haven't been where they usually are, Watters is optimistic people will still show up. He thinks they're just waiting to see what kind of condition 14th Street is in.

Luckily, it's "smoother than it's been in years," he said.

After the city tore up 14th Street between O and P streets — now known as the Boehmer Street music district — as part of the massive overhaul of Lincoln's main downtown corridor, crews laid down a temporary 2-inch concrete layer for the event.

That will allow festivalgoers to safely travel from the adjacent businesses into the roadway, project manager Jared Nichl said.

The cost to lay down and remove that concrete after the event was included in Project O Street's budget, though Nichl did not know exactly how much.

It's just too bad 14th Street won't remain closed to cars permanently. More pedestrian boulevards please!

A reminder that you can submit things for future "What to do this weekend" posts. If you have events later in July and August, please tell me about them!

I provide these weekly event roundups as a community service. They are free to everyone and always will be! But they do take a lot of time and effort to produce. If you find my work here valuable, please consider signing up for a paid subscription.

You'll help keep the newsletter sustainable to produce. Plus, becoming a paid supporter will give you access to future installments of The Good Life? column, where I make snarky comments about dumb shit happening in Nebraska.
