About

This Week In Lincoln is a newsletter from Tynan Stewart, a freelance journalist and resident of Lincoln, Nebraska.

Here's what you'll get if you sign up:

  • A list of local events in your inbox: I send this out every Thursday morning around 11 am. These events will be selected and curated by me, rather than fed to you by an algorithm or advertising. There's way too much stuff happening every weekend, so I can't include everything, and you'll likely see a heavy bias towards arts and culture because that's what interests me! But I try not to neglect the other important stuff, like city council meetings, protests, and mutual aid events.
  • Film reviews: I try to write about whatever's playing at the Ross Media Arts Theater, which programs independent and art-house flicks that often never show at Marcus locations. For example, I've reviewed Sirāt, Pillion, and Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie.
  • Standalone essays or reported pieces: I wrote this review of folklorist Roger Welsch's out-of-print travel guide Inside Lincoln, covered of Lincoln's No Kings protests against the Trump administration, and penned this reflection on a new exhibit at the Sheldon that challenges the idea of America as a cultural "melting pot."
  • Guest essays from local writers: Local neighborhood organizer Brent Lucke wrote this great tribute to former Lincoln mayor Coleen Seng and her legacy of community building. If you're a writer and have ideas you think would be a good fit for the newsletter, hit me up.

I originally created This Week In Lincoln because I was sick of how hard it is to find a simple events calendar! I love browsing the bulletin boards at Meadowlark and Cultiva, but it's impossible to find a good, community-focused calendar that's simple, up-to-date and accessible online.

If you have an event you think is a good fit for my weekly event roundups, you're welcome to send it to me. I just ask that you please do so through this form. (Sorry, but it's much harder on me to accept things by email. The form ensures that I get all the info I need.) I try to get those posts out by 11 am on Thursday. If you send me something any later than, say, 9 am that morning, I can't guarantee I'll see it.

Thanks for reading! And if you like what I'm doing here, please share the newsletter with your friends, and consider signing up for a paid subscription to support this project. It takes a significant amount of time each week to curate events that actually look interesting. Your support will help make that work sustainable!
