What to do this weekend - October 8, 2026

Hi,

This is my round-up of local events that publishes every Thursday morning. You can find the calendar below. Here's a link to submit events for future posts!

I was at the Sheldon last night for the launch of The Lives of Immigrants and Refugees, a new book published by the University of Nebraska Press that features essays and contributions from refugees and migrants living in Lincoln.

Folks might not always realize it, but we are very much a city of immigrants: Our city is home to 30,000 migrants and refugees hailing from 150 different countries. And that's something this book wants us to celebrate and learn from. Multiple contributors to the volume shared their stories last night, and hearing them talk about their lives and perspectives on the U.S. — what they loved, what they found strange, and how people made them feel welcome — was a welcome (though perhaps unintentional) rebuttal to the fascist carnival that just wrapped up in Grand Island.

Lincoln certainly isn't perfect. But so many people here care about their neighbors, no matter where they are from, and that's worth remembering, even if we could always be doing more for them.

Here's a bit more about the book:

The Lives of Immigrants and Refugees offers thirty-one essays by immigrants and refugees who now call Lincoln, Nebraska, home. These individuals have found support, belonging, and opportunity through the collaborative work of Lincoln’s New Americans Task Force members and the Lincoln/Lancaster County Welcoming and Belonging Strategic Plan. The stories in this book are brilliant, harrowing, poetic, and revelatory. They’re also stories of survival, resilience, creativity, and a staggering amount of work: learning a new language, navigating a challenging immigration system, being perceived as a foreigner, struggling to grasp strange new customs and traditions, working one’s way out of extreme poverty, working through trauma and grief. Those of us who have had the good fortune of not being displaced have much to learn by listening.

Thanks for being here! Please share This Week In Lincoln with a friend and help me keeping growing this project.
