What to do this weekend - May 21, 2026
It's Memorial Day weekend but there's still plenty of fun stuff to do.
Hi,
Welcome back to This Week In Lincoln. I've returned from a hellish weekend of travel. Our plane actually made it within spitting distance of Lincoln on Sunday but couldn't land because of the storms. So we turned around, flew back to Chicago, and left at 6 am the next morning. But at least the weather photos were cool!
I'd like to catch up on sleep, but first I labored a bit in the content mines and scraped together some cool events for you. It's Memorial Day weekend, but there's still a ton fun stuff happening! (And then there's the unfurling of a 3,000 lb. American flag at the Sandhills Global Event Center. I dunno maybe you find extravagant displays of patriotic nationalism fun but if so you may be reading the wrong newsletter.)
Here's a few other things you should know:
- The Lincoln and Lancaster County governments are looking for feedback on their long-range transportation plan, mobility plan and comprehensive plan for 2050. You can find more details and offer comments and suggestions here.
- The LUX Center for the Arts is looking for Nebraska-based artists to be featured in their community gallery. This opportunity is open to individuals, collectives and community groups, and they especially encourage folks whose work isn't traditionally represented in galleries to apply. Find more details and the submission form here.
- There's going to be a vacancy on the Library's Board of Trustees soon. Board members are appointed by the City Council, and the only official requirement is that the applicant be a city resident. That said, based on the application, it looks like they're looking for folks with experience related to budgeting, human resources, accounting, technology, and legal matters relating to government or nonprofit organizations. You can find more details here. Applications are due May 31.
A reminder that you can submit things for future "What to do this weekend" posts. I'm trying to fill out the calendar for later this summer, so if you have events in June, July and August, please tell me about them!
You can also just reach out and say hi. My email is tynanstewart@proton.me
I'm also, regrettably, on Letterboxd, Instagram and Bluesky so follow me there or whatever.

Chaplin, in his first pure talkie, brings his sublime physicality to two roles: the cruel yet clownish “Tomainian” dictator and the kindly Jewish barber who is mistaken for him. Featuring Jack Oakie and Paulette Goddard in stellar supporting turns, The Great Dictator, boldly going after the fascist leader before the U.S.’s official entry into World War II, is an audacious amalgam of politics and slapstick that culminates in Chaplin’s famously impassioned speech."
