What to do this weekend - June 11, 2026
New zines, tabling, and a crazy weekend downtown.
Hi,
Welcome back to This Week In Lincoln. As usual, I've got a bunch of cool events for you. Scroll down for all that. Plus here's some other stuff you should know:
- Local music zine Interrobang has a new issue out! It's a full multimedia production with music and embedded videos and it features reviews of some rad sounding recent shows at El Proyecto and the Fox Den (both of which I'm sad to have missed). Go check it out and follow Interrobang on instagram!
- I didn't include this in the weekend's event calendar because there are few things that interest me less, but the Savannah Bananas are playing two sold-out games this weekend: This evening at Haymarket Park and Saturday at Memorial Stadium. The fact that a Bananas game and Star City Pride are happening on the same day amidst the ongoing O Street closures is a little daunting. Hotels in town are reportedly packed. So plan accordingly.
- I'll personally be spending part of my Saturday at Sower Books tabling at the release party for the newest issue of Lincoln's other cool ongoing zine, Junk Drawer. Come out between noon and 4 pm and say hi (and buy some zines).
- Finally in politics news, independent candidate Austin Ahlman, a late entry into the race for Nebraska's 1st congressional district, is holding a town hall tonight in Norfolk. (7:30 pm at the VFW Hall)
Here's my pitch for you to sign up as a paid subscriber!! I provide these weekly event roundups for free as a community service. And I enjoy working on this newsletter, but it does take a lot of time and effort to produce. So if you find my work here valuable, please consider signing up for a paid subscription. I don't do sponsorships or ads, so your direct support really makes a difference! (I also have a Patreon and a tip jar.)
A reminder that you can submit things for future "What to do this weekend" posts. I'm trying to fill out the calendar for later this summer, so if you have events later in June, July and August, please tell me about them!
You can also just reach out and say hi. My email is tynanstewart@proton.me
I'm also, regrettably, on Letterboxd, Instagram and Bluesky so follow me there or whatever.
~ Ty
P.S. Sorry for any typos. But also, at least they are proof that this is human made. I'll never outsource any part of this newsletter to AI!

His two estranged children (James Corden, Jessica Gunning), desperate for an inheritance, hire Lori, an art restorer and former forger (Michaela Coel), to pose as a prospective assistant in order to access 8 unfinished canvases Julian has buried deep in storage. Her plan is to complete them, then return them to storage, where they are to be “discovered” upon Julian’s death."

More details about the film: "Sigurd Lewerentz is one of the most famous Swedish architects, considered a master of the profession internationally. His unique solutions were decades ahead of their time. Lewerentz did not want to be filmed or interviewed. His person, like his buildings, is surrounded by a mysterious aura. But in a root cellar in Lund, there is an unknown treasure. Film reels and audio tapes recorded by the architect Bernt Nyberg with Lewerentz during his last years are stored here. From the cellar, a culturalhistorical journey begins, where the stylistic traces of Lewerentz within Nordic architecture become palpable. Classicism and modernism converge in a poetic brutality that awakens our deepest and most archaic cultural memories."

Featuring Jack Oakie and Paulette Goddard in stellar supporting turns, The Great Dictator, boldly going after the fascist leader before the U.S.’s official entry into World War II, is an audacious amalgam of politics and slapstick that culminates in Chaplin’s famously impassioned speech."

Film: Nashville
+ When: 1:30 pm
+ Where: Ross Media Arts Center, 313 N 13th St. (Google Maps)
+ Cost: $10
More details about the film: "This cornerstone of 1970s American moviemaking from Robert Altman is a panoramic view of the country’s political and cultural landscapes, set in the nation’s music capital. Nashville weaves the stories of twenty-four characters—from country star to wannabe to reporter to waitress—into a cinematic tapestry that is equal parts comedy, tragedy, and musical. Many members of the astonishing cast wrote their own songs and performed them live on location, which lends another layer to the film’s quirky authenticity. Altman’s ability to get to the heart of American life via its eccentric byways was never put to better use than in this grand, rollicking triumph, which barrels forward to an unforgettable conclusion."

From the mid-1970s onward, LGBTQ rodeo athletes carved out a space where they could compete openly, challenge heteronormative ideas about sport and identity, and build community across the rural American West. What began as a safe space for athletes evolved into a powerful philanthropic force, one that was pivotal in the fight against AIDS."

Film: Remember the Drumstick
+ When: 7:30 pm
+ Where: Ross Media Arts Center, 313 N 13th St. (Google Maps)
+ Cost: $10
More details about the film: "Tim Lohmeier, by accident, created something in Nebraska in the 1980s – The Drumstick. A chicken restaurant by day and the hottest rock club in Nebraska by night. He booked some of the best music of the times BEFORE the rest of the world knew they were the best. Groups like Joan Jett, Luther Allison, Red Hot Chili Peppers, REM, Dwight Yoakam, X, Marty Stuart, Jason and the Scorchers. The Drumstick also gave local great plains musicians with original music a place to perform. Fab local acts like Charlie Burton and Rock Therapy, Boys with Toys, Model Citizens. The list goes on and on. Oh, and don’t forget the fried chicken and Texas toast. The building that housed the business was torn down in 1987 to make room for a fast food restaurant. Tim died in 1998. Very little remains of the club with the exception of a few photos, home videos and a lot of memories. Memories that are preserved in this documentary as part of the 1980s proud music history."
