What to do this weekend - January 29, 2026
Fuck ICE.
Hi,
Welcome to This Week In Lincoln.
It's been a rough week — a rough few weeks. But you don't need me to tell you that. You already know what's happening: that federal agents killed two Americans in Minneapolis; that ICE and the Border Patrol are abducting and brutalizing citizens and non-citizens with impunity; that the officials theoretically in charge of holding them accountable are, instead, trying to frame ordinary people — folks who just care about the well-being of their neighbors — as domestic terrorists.
I keep thinking about the summer of 2020, not just because Donald Trump is back in power, not just because Minneapolis is once again at the center of things but also because there's that same sense that events of enormous consequence are happening very quickly. It's overwhelming and all you can do is choose how to respond.
Since the killing of Alex Pretti on Jan. 24, there have been at least two protests and acts of communal solidarity in Lincoln. Hopefully those won't be the last. I went to Tuesday's march and vigil, which began near the statue of Chief Standing Bear and ended at the Capitol. I saw some friends, met some new people, snapped some photos. Mostly, I just wanted to be in community with others and be reminded that people really do care about their neighbors, even in such bleak, ugly times.
You can read coverage of the vigil from the Journal Star, the Daily Nebraskan and 1011 News. And here's a list of mutual aid organizations in Minneapolis that could use your help.

Here's a few other things to know:
- KZUM is currently accepting applications from local bands to play in their summer concert series. The concerts are happening every Thursday, June through July. They're looking for Nebraska-based musicians who perform original stuff!
- Here's a list of free community events that happen in Lincoln on a regular basis. I've included some of them in past editions of the newsletter, and this looks like a pretty good page to bookmark and share with others as a resource.
Got an event you want to see featured in next week's event roundup? Submit it here. You can also send feedback, suggestions, compliments, criticism and ideas for things I should write about to tynanstewart@proton.me
