What to do this weekend - February 5, 2026
It's almost sandhill crane migration season for those who celebrate.
Hi,
Welcome back to This Week In Lincoln. Here's a bunch of stuff that's happened since this time last week, all in one paragraph:
A few hundred Lincoln Southeast students walked out of class Wednesday to protest ICE. Several local businesses closed for last Friday's nationwide general strike, while others promised to donated some of their profits to organizations that support immigrants. Nebraska's branch of the ACLU sued the Trump administration for holding migrants indefinitely in McCook's so-called "Cornhusker Clink." UNL's student government voted to urge the university to divest from weapons manufactures, a decision that came after three hours of testimony from students, most of whom spoke in support. (The measure was put forward by the campus chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine.) U.S. Rep. Mike Flood, the Republican incumbent in Nebraska's 1st District, has raised over $1.42 million for his reelection bid, vastly more than his Democratic challengers. Measles was detected in local wastewater (again), but there is still only one confirmed case in Lancaster County (fortunately).
A few other things to know:
- We're getting close to sandhill crane migration season for those who celebrate. Cool birds, love those guys. Here's a guide on how best to view "the World's Most Underrated Wildlife Spectacle" and here's a live feed of the Platte River, a popular roosting spot for the cranes, courtesy of Audubon’s Rowe Sanctuary.
- Modern Monks Breadello is hosting a Valentine's Day bagel pop-up at Boiler Brewing Company. You'll need to pre-order by 8 pm on Thursday, February 12. Pickup is from noon to 3 pm at the brewery, 129 North 10th St.
